Ogden Mighty Watt Cartridge Heaters
The Ogden Mighty Watt is an elite category of high density cartridge heaters. No other swaged cartridge heater is compacted to the extent of the Mighty Watt, producing excellent heat transfer capability and the dielectric and physical strength necessary for long life and outstanding performance. The Mighty Watt is designed for applications where high operating temperatures are required, or where heaters are subjected to vibration. Because the construction allows maximum heat transfer and high temperatures, it is possible to use fewer heaters at higher watt densities to reduce space requirements. The Mighty Watt is available from 1/8″ to 1-1/4″ diameters in just about any conceivable increment. With designed-in quality and reliability, the Mighty Watt is the ideal heat source for any process. |
Computer generated manufacturing specifications Nickel-Chromium resistance wire precisely wound on a Magnesium Oxide core Exact centering of the core and closeness of windings to the sheath ensures efficient heat transfer and lower internal temperatures Heavy wall Incoloy or 304 Stainless Steel sheath provides for maximum protection against high temperature oxidation and corrosion Bottom Slug is TIG welded to the sheath to prevent contamination High purity Magnesium Oxide is thoroughly compacted and the entire assembly is swaged to the ideal density to create a heavier mass than other cartridge heaters for the best possible heat transfer High density cap seals Magnesium Oxide in place and resists contaminationMIGHTY WATT PLUS (U.S. Patent# 5,034,595)

STAINLESS STEEL BRAIDED LEAD PROTECTION
Swaged-in double conductor stainless steel braid is internally connected for strength and full length flexibility. See chart below for the additional dimension the Mighty Watt Plus Figure F and Figure G adds to the sheath length of stock items. For non-stock single conductor braided lead protection, specify Figure H for straight exit, Figure J for right angle. When ordering non-stock Fig. F, G, H or J items, specify the overall sheath length. 14″ high temperature (850 F/450 C) leads with 12″ braid is standard. Specify additional length.
|
RIGHT ANGLE FLEXIBLE LEADS
Figure R is used when spacing requirements are limited. See chart below for the additional dimension the Mighty Watt Plus adds to the sheath length of stock items. When ordering non-stock Fig. R, specify the overall sheath length. High temperature (850 F/450 C) leads are fully flexible from the exit of the sheath. 12″ lead wire is standard. Specify additional length.
|
UNHEATED SHEATH EXTENSION
Figure U adds an unheated area to the lead end of stock Mighty Watt Cartridge Heaters. Any practical length greater than 1/2″ can be selected. The standard lead configuration is with 12″ fully flexible high temperature (850 F/450 C) leads. Specify longer length if required. Figure U can also include braided or armor cable protected leads. Consult BigChief. Non-stock Mighty Watt Cartridge Heaters can be designed and manufactured with practically any unheated area. |
UNHEATED SHEATH EXTENSION WITH EPOXY SEAL
Fig. E – Shown are the same Mighty Watt Cartridge Heaters modified from stock with 3/4″, 1-1/4″ and 1-3/4″ long sheath extension, Fig. E Epoxy seal and Teflon leads. |
Figure E provides an epoxy seal to protect Mighty Watt cartridge heaters from the contaminates that cause early failure. Typically supplied with 12″ Teflon leads. Specify longer length. Maximum temperature at lead end 300 F/150 C.

CARTRIDGE IMMERSION HEATER
Figure M is a brass, steel or stainless steel pipe fitting which allows liquid tight installation through threaded openings. Fittings are brazed. For welded fittings and other cartridge immersion heater variations, scroll along this section. Be certain the watt density and sheath material are compatible with the material being heated.

MIGHTY WATT WITH INTERNAL THERMOCOUPLE
The Mighty Watt with internal thermocouple is for applications where monitoring the internal temperature of the heater is necessary as over-heat protection or where material flow is close to the heater sheath as in plastic molding. 12″ high temperature (850 F/450 C) leads are standard. When ordering, specify whether the junction is grounded or ungrounded. The standard position for either a grounded or ungrounded junction is at the bottom. For other positions, consult BigChief. Mighty Watt Cartridge Heaters are also available with built-in snap action thermostats. |
MOISTURE AND CONTAMINATION RESISTANT LEADS
Fig. T-Teflon Seal Swaged in Teflon seal and leads resist oil and water up to 482 F/250 C maximum application temperature. Available in Mighty Watt construction in 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ diameters. Minimum unheated area at lead end is 1″. Standard lead length is 12″. |
THREADED TERMINALS
Screw terminals facillitate ease of connection using lug terminals, standard leads or bus bar.Fig. Y is available in 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″, 15/16″, 1″ and 1-1/4″ diameters. Standard terminals are 8-32 x 58″. Other terminal sizes are available. Consult BigChief. |
